From Casa La Selva it is to just a short  (10 minute) drive down the hillside to Spedalicchio, a village with a bar and a small alimentari (general store). From there it is about 5 minutes along the valley to Mercatale and Lisciano Niccone, small market towns with a range of shops and facilities.  The regional centre of Umbertide, which has two big supermarkets and many other facilities, is just 20 minutes drive from the house.

Local produce
Umbria's cookery is based on local produce.  Porcini mushrooms, black and white tartufi (truffles) and cingiale (wild boar) are particular local specialities, although other local produce including tomatoes, figs, basil, fresh pasta, wine and olive oil is excellent too.

As well as the produce available in the supermarkets in Umbertide, there is an organic farm shop just outside Spedalicchio, which has local produce in season plus a good range of organic preserves and dried goods.  Also near Spedalicchio are the vineyards of the Gritti family, which have recently started producing good local wines available direct from the producer.
 

Shopping
For those who wish to indulge their interest in Italian designer clothes whilst on vacation, or who just enjoy a leisurely afternoon of lunch and window shopping, there are good ranges of stores in Citta di Castello (25 minutes)
and Perugia (40 minutes).
